Crazy Kids
One of the directors at our company is hosting an sixteen year old exchange student from Europe this year. The director got a nice little notice from our “friends” at the DMCA. It appears that someone on his network was sharing a movie about a large green man. The director works from home and asks me to log in remotely and verify that the wireless network was setup properly.
The director had told me that I would have access all day since he was taking a vacation day. I logged into his computer in the middle of the afternoon and began working. I worked for an hour securing the network, enabling the wireless security (which had been disabled) and making sure the laptop would connect to the wireless. Suddenly I notice the mouse pointer going crazy! Someone started closing all the apps I had open. The movements were rather frantic and hurried.
I figured the directors kids or wife had found me working and got scared. My tasks were completed, so I close the remote window and called the director’s cell and left a message explaining my work and about the closing of applications.
The director called me an hour later laughing. He said I had given the exchange student a heartache and that his wife made it worse. The exchange student saw me working on the laptop and closed the applications. He then went to the director’s wife and told her what happened. She said, “we got an email today saying that someone had downloaded a movie from the internet. That was probably someone checking the laptop out in response to the email.” The student freaked out! He went and got his laptop and uninstalled all of his internet applications – browsers, email clients, IM clients, torrent client, everything!! He then deleted all of his music and movies.
The director got home from running errands, and his wife said go talk to the student. He thinks he is getting arrested for the DMCA notice. The kids was scared and thought the government was controlling the laptop and that his would be next. The director explained everything and asked the student to not download or SHARE movies or music from file sharing sites.
I got a good laugh at the expense of the exchange student.
